Ken asks…

What would you charge for a Professional Lawn care service on a monthly basis. What would you expect to pay?

I'm thinking about starting a Lawn Care business soon. I just need some research. Service includes: Mowing, edging, seasonal leaf removal, bi-yearly aeration and fertilization. What would you be willing to pay for all that?
If you were the customer, what would you be willing to pay for a professional Lawn Care service consisting of Mowing, edging, weedeating, seasonal leaf removal, bi-yearly aerating and fertilization. What would be a fair price for you?

landscapeliving answers:

I believe you should ask. How much does it cost me to mow someones lawn? Labor, equipment, maintenance, vehicle, insurance, license, etc. I spent A lot of time working on my labor rate. Lets say a lawnmower cost $750.00 and with heavy use it will mow 350 lawns before replacement, it would cost $2.14 per lawn for the mower. Put all your numbers for fuel, oil, labor and anything else you can think of into a spreadsheet, add it up and walla. Then don't forget the most important part (profit) 10% to 20% at least

George asks…

What would you change in this advertisement for landscaping service?

I have the entries listed as such underneath the logo:

* Lawn Maintenence * Aeration, Seeding
* Mulch, Topsoil * Irrigation
* Plant Installation * Ponds, Aquatics
* Bed Preparation * Patios, Walks
* Plant/Tree Service * Seasonal Flowers

Do any of these entries seem like they could be changed or re worded or even deleted to make it better?
Would you change any of the entries or add anything?
WHICH WORDS ARE MISPELLED?

I DONT SEE ANY?

ALSO IT LOOKS STRAIGHTER THAN IT IS HERE. THERE ARE TWO ROWS . AND IT IS GOING ON A HALF OF A 8 1/2" X 11" PAPER

landscapeliving answers:

Use the word "professional", but only with understanding of what that means.
Can you turn up quickly? Are you inexpensive? Do you really clean up after your work? Can you include refs (pics of work done and/or clients worth mentioning)? How many of you do the work, as a team? Are you insured? (against what?)

LANDSCAPING DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE PROFESSIONALS
could be your headline. You don't need a list of everything you do...it'd probably be incomplete anyway!

Best of luck!

David asks…

Starting a lawn care/grounds maintenance business and need a good, catchy, easy name that can be a ".com" as well.

Had a few names in mind, some I already own the ".com" for...which name sounds the best? or any other ideas?

Thanks for your help

Ruth asks…

Should I pay a company who did lawn fertilizing without my authorization?

I hired and paid a lawn fertilizing company in 2006 for fertilizing service in Michigan. I sold my house in March 2007, but the same company continued fertilizing service in April, 2007 without my authorization. The fertilizing company called me requesting payment (aeration and 3 fertilizing =$198). I refused the payment because I did not request their service continued in 2007. They said I was liable because I did not cancel the service. Are they right?

landscapeliving answers:

If in the contract you signed with the company, it says that you agree to continue services until you provide them a notice of cancellation, then yeah -- they're right, you owe them. . . If, however, it says nothing about continuation of services or a need to cancel, then . . . You're free.

Check the contract -- it'll be your saving grace.

John asks…

How do I get a lawn business to stop sending me invoices for a service not recieved?

18 months ago I contacted a company to have aeration done to my lawn for $99. The technicin did not show up on the day scheduled so I called and it was re-scheduled. On the re-scheduled day, the "technician" showed up in a passenger car without any company markings or I.D. and proceeded to fill a dry sprayer with water from my hose in front of me. He then sprayed water haphazardly on my about half my lawn until the water was gone. When he went to refill his tank with water, I asked him what he was doing and he indicated he was spraying liquid fertilizer on my lawn. When I pointed out he was spraying only water, he all of a sudden could not speak any English.

After filing a BBB complaint (and finding the company has an F- rating) I agreed to have the aeration done again. However, that didn't happen and the company has done nothing but send me emails demaninding payment and today I recieved a letter stating they were turning me over to a collection agency. Is there anything I can do to protect myself from this?

landscapeliving answers:

Yes, in the future you can protect yourself from this by doing research into any company that you are planning on hiring to perform a service. In this case, you would have discovered their low BBB rating and all this would have been prevented. Now, however, you are stuck battling a business that is claiming it provided a service and was not paid. Get a lawyer or take the hit on your credit report. No other choices now.
