Carol asks…

Whats the best gift for my grandma and grandpa?

there old fashion
granma cooks and cleans round the house
and my grandpa likes landscaping and works on the yars a lot but already has all the tools
wut are some good suggestions??

landscapeliving answers:

Some plant signs for his outdoor plants. A new trowel or pair of gloves,
How about some new, fresh spices for grandma? Those can get pricey for someone on a fixed income. Also a new cookbook for her to try some new recipes, maybe one which specializes in cooking for 2.

Laura asks…

How can I resolve this issue with my best friend of 11 years?

My friend and I have been living together for the past 4 years or so and things seem to be a bit rocky at least to me. It seems like he's become a very disgruntled and rude person in recent time not just towards me but towards everyone he comes in contact with that's not some "super hot chick", at which point he puts on the charming guy face and acts like someone he's not to get anything he wants from the girl in short order.

Every action that I do seems completely rational to me but seems to become some kind of huge deal to him and he will just constantly insult me about it. Last week his car broke down and I had to take him to fix it. As I was getting in my car he ran to the garage to grab some filthy old tool box and some other accessories so I got out of my car and spread a sheet out on the back seat to make a place for his tools. He immediately heads towards the back of my car with tools in hand and asks me to open the trunk. This is where things go downhill and we start arguing for the next 30 minutes. I said "Hey just put them up here (the back seat)."

As soon as those words leave my mouth he flips out says "What the - is your deal man? You can't just let me put the tools in the trunk? (my trunk is messed up from vandalism and is difficult to use) Dude something is wrong with your head and you need to like get mental help. It always has to be your way or nothing at all."

To me I saw the situation as being no different than if I were wanting to put something in his car and he asked me to put it in a certain spot, something completely normal. Almost any time I talk about any subject he tells me I'm wrong or retarded even if it's something I have a lot of experience with.

Sometimes he will ask me for advice for something and I will give it to him. Maybe something like what can I use to kill these weeds in my yard without killing everything else? I tell him what works ( I was in landscaping for 13 years ) he goes to the store and says the guy there told him to get "X" product so he comes back with that because the guy claimed to have taken care of a golf course at one point. Sometimes I don't know why he even asks me anything.

Basically I'm tired of being depressed because he makes me feel like an idiot with every word I say. How do you deal with a friend like this? It's like you have 2 choices, either argue with him or just cave in and go with what he wants. Although he might say the same thing about me.

Reccommended software for...?

For editing photography, in particular water landscapes, high speed liquid, and motion blur etc.

And also, what are the best tools in photoshop to use to edit thess types of photos?
Thanks, any help appreciated.

landscapeliving answers:

These are 'effects' that you achieve in camera using an appropriate shutter speed, or in the case of 'high speed liquid' usually off camera flash.

There are some blur & motion tools to use in Photoshop - radial motion for example - should be under the Fitlers drop down

Daniel asks…

How would we do this kind of landscaping by ourselves?

So we just want a front flowerbed with woodchips and a few bushes. The only problem is that we would like the front of the flowerbed not to be straight but curvy, so I was just wondering how I can get the grass that we have already planted out of the way so we can make it curvy. What tool should we use for that? Also, where can we get easy to maintain, bushes and trees. What kind of bushes are best? What trees are best?
I live in a small town in Utah, where the weather is basically normal. Up in the hundreds in the summer. Down below freezing in the winter, with lots of snow!

landscapeliving answers:

Use a garden hose to lay out the bed line. You want a nice smooth curve. Use a sharp flat spade to cut the line in the grass then use whatever is handy to dig up the grass (shovels, hoes, pick ax, etc.).
Check with a local garden center to find out what will do well in your area. Pay attention to the mature sizes of the plants and give them room to grow when planting.

George asks…

Why is nationalism on the rise?

I see it everywhere. Its probably most pronounced in the US, but it seems to be on the rise everywhere I go - and as best I'm aware, if we scrolled back in time a decade or two everyone would have been predicting just the opposite, an increase in internationalism.

When are we going to stop getting our identities from our nationality? Its one of the foremost things people use to self-identify, I'm Brazilian, I'm American, I'm French etc. And its how we identify others too (and a tool we use to automatically assign their views). Its like we identify with people of our own nationality as more human than anyone else. It's insiduous and I feel like we should be telling anyone flag-waving in any country that they're an idiot. So long as our self-identity and the way we categorize other people is based on nationality we're doomed to an insular, xenophobic and war-torn geo-political landscape. That's my view anyway. Thoughts?
Veronica: I disagree with that strongly, for numerous reasons too complex to get into here. I'll just say that nationalism has traditionally been associated with religiousity, not with sectarianism. Indeed, certainly in the case of the US, religiousity is not in decline, it's on the rise, and is rising in synch with nationalism it seems to me.
I should point out - I'm talking about nationalism vs internationalism as a way of looking at the world and people in it. I'm not making an argument for or against literal globalism - ie the development of one federalized state. That's a whole different issue.

It's just about whether we recognise that the national boundaries we do have are just legal constructs. There seems to be an increasing propensity to view nations as somehow existing in nature, and to view their inhabitants as somehow biologically or divinely different from people elsewhere. Nations may well be necessary as a legal construct, it's when we start viewing them as more that problems arise.

And I do wear sandals. I don't read the guardian.

landscapeliving answers:

It was , supposedly , on the rise after 9/11 with all the "United We Stand" bumper stickers. Pretty much a joke ...It's hard enough to get people "united" as to what radio station to listen to at work ...

I think nationalism is in the dumpster because of the administration. The War. The Deficit.
