What is the best method to seed over an existing lawn?

The lawn was filled with weeds and crabgrass, by the time they all died out after spraying I am left with very little actual grass. Can I use a thatcher and then just spread seed over this fall

Don't use a thatcher. Thatch is not your issue. Soil compaction is. Rent an aerator and run that over the lawn. Then go back and rent an overseeding machine which cuts little grooves into the soil and seeds at the same time. Water, water, water.

Read the manual. It will tell you if it is a right hand or left hand thread. I'd bet on left hand, but don't quote me on it.

If I let the crabgrass in my yard die a natural death, will I have time to plant grass in the Fall?

I am in the Northeast. Also, when the crabgrass dies, how do I get it out of my yard? Do I rake it out? Do I need to rent a thatcher?
The crabgrass is covering abou 4,00 feet in a 10,000 foot lawn.
