Your Questions About Best Landscaping Tools

James asks…
My boss keeps putting off paying me?
This summer, I have been working a landscaping job. I have been getting paid on a regular basis. There is no employment contract, and no paycheck stub to speak of.
Over the last two weeks, my boss has slipped behind with my pay, and it has gradually added up to a rather large sum. He now seems to put off paying me everytime I talk to him.
I'm not sure exactly what to do. I don't want to quit for fear I will never hear from him again. but I don't want to work anymore without being paid. I am trying to discreetly find reasons to take the day off until he pays me.
I know I am not in the best legal standing if he decides he is not going to pay me. There is no employment contract, and no paperwork saying I am an employee. I am effectively being treated like an independant contractor. However, I use his tools, I only work for him, and I am listed on the vehicle insurrance for his landscaping truck.
What are my options?
As to the tax cheat accusations, I can pay my taxes myself. Being paid in cash does not automatically mean tax fraud. I have a lot of accountants in my family who would never let me get away with that.
In response to another comment. I am actually on the insurrance. I had to go to State Farm.
landscapeliving answers:
Your boss is breaking the law and can go to jail for a very long time. First, he is not paying his taxes. You could be in trouble for the same thing. If you are earning a paycheck, you must pay FICA, federal, state and so on. He has to pay as well. He also has to keep employment records. We're talking federal laws being broken here. Not to mention your state will want to speak to him as well. If you are listed on his company's vehicle insurance, they will want to know why.
Only your boss, his immediate family, and workers can be listed on a commercial vehicle. He can't insure an "independent contractor" on his vehicle. So that won't fly. He can't use that against you. This is your proof. Keep accurate records of all the time you have worked and not gotten paid. Go to your local labor board and report him. But be advised, you may be asked why you aren't paying taxes and why you agreed to work with no records. He may not be the only one in trouble.
You can do that, or report him to the IRS... Otherwise you are stuck. So, your choices are: report him, continue working for free, or find another job. No matter what, the honest thing to do is to report this guy so he doesn't keep doing it to other people..... And offer to catch up your taxes.
There is an added risk here. If you do nothing and someone finds out about this guy... Or if he's ever audited, you can be in a world of trouble. You can even go to jail. I suggest you get help now.
God bless!

Susan asks…
Questions about planting a lavender border?
I know nothing about gardening, but I'd like to install a lavender border in front of my house and along the sidewalk. I live in zone 7 (Atlanta) Right now, the plot is weedy and hard and the former owners put down a weed preventive fabric that didn't work.
I have no gardening tools and I'm sure the soil needs to be treated before I start with the project.
Here are my questions:
when would be the best time to begin the project? Getting the soil ready and planting the lavender?
Should I hire a landscaping company to do the job and have it done correctly? And save myself the trouble of renting tillers and whatever and making mistakes?
The plot is about 35 X 5.
landscapeliving answers:
I would begin this summer and fall in preparing the soil, and do the planting next spring. Your biggest problem in trying to do it yourself will be the tilling. Even a good tiller can have problems digging through where there is a lot of old grass and weed roots. We have had to spend almost as much time digging the roots out of the tiller blades as we did in tilling up the sod.
As far as amendments to the soil, lavender does not like too rich a soil, so just some peat to loosen it and help it hold water better, and some compost should be enough to dig in. Let it sit over the winter, and then just loosen it up again next spring, pull any weeds that might have come up early, and put the plants in.
Another thing to consider when using lavender is that it likes to be dug up and divided periodically to do really well. Mine was really nice for three years, fairly good in year four, but the plant was almost dead by year five because I didn't do that.
Whether you hire a landscaping company or not depends mostly on just how much time and effort you want to spend yourself.

Paul asks…
Have you ever been afraid or embarrassed to introduce your boyfriend to your parents?
I'm dating another guy for my first time (I'm gay). I'm 22 and he's 25, yet he's already very well off (owns 2 cars, one of which cost him $50k, a 2-story house, mad-expensive stuff etc.) He takes extremely good care of his cars, house, and lawn and likes to jokingly make fun of people's houses or garden's that are in disarray. He really enjoys fixing his cars, woodworking and doing DIY projects on his house and he has the best, industrial-grade machinery that my dad would KILL to have.
So, thing is...my parent's house is kinda in disarray, especially their landscaping. Both my mom and dad drive rather crappy cars and my dad doesn't have nearly as nice tools and machinery as my bf. It just feels kinda weird that my bf is already living better than my parents at such a young age and I'm afraid he's gonna judge them or something. What do you think??
OK, i guess I made him sound like a douche, but he's actually a really nice guy. He doesn't make fun of other people's livings (after all...he's well aware that I'm dirt-poor)...its that he makes fun of people that don't take care of their stuff..whether it be a tractor or a BMW)
landscapeliving answers:
Well I'm 20 at the moment and my boyfriend is the same age as my mum - 38 (it's a big age gap I know but anyway). My boyfriend has the best of everything, really modern apartment, lavish lifestyle, expensive clothes and everything. My family home is rather old. It needs a lot of work done but my mum simply can't afford it at the moment. The thing is, while my boyfriend may have all this fancy stuff he knows he doesn't need it.
He loves me for me and didn't always have money himself. I know that when he visits my family and house he'll see that we're not very well off but that doesn't matter to him. That's why I'm with him, because it's me he wants not my lifestyle. He treats me great and makes me happy that's all that really matters. My advice to you would be as soon as your boyfriend makes a negative remark on your parents home - dump him. If he's mature enough and loves you enough to respect your family - keep him.
