Paul asks…

How do the best landscape photographers make money?

What are the best ways for one to become a landscape photographer and not be worried about living on the streets? How can they make money? It is my dream to become a landscape photographer after I graduate from A&M soon. How would I go about making the most possible money? I ask this because I do plan on having a family, and of course I want to be able to provide for them. Thanks!

Jake

landscapeliving answers:

I agree with the first answer, it's a hard question with no real easy answer. Photograhy is a hard industry to get into and expect to start yeilding real income from. The best photographers really know how to sell themselves and have superb networking skills, yet it is hard to step into it making good money. According to Ken Rockwell, the average photographer makes, on average $24,000 a year. Most other photographers have day jobs doing something else to support things like living expenses and family. I would recommend finding a job that will pay the bills while you hone your craft. Afterall, landscape photography isn't an instant thing, more like selling paintings. It would be different if you decided to become a wedding photographer because at least you know the industry has demand.

Betty asks…

who are the best photographers in the world according to their respected categories?

i would like to know people's opinion opinions of the best photographers according to categories like landscape, macro, commercial, wedding, photojournalism and so on. would love to see a list of them, to get inspirations from top photographers.

landscapeliving answers:

There are probably as many different answers as there are people. Here's a few to start with:
Landscape: Ansel Adams
Portraiture: Karsh
Nudes: Sam Haskins, Peter Basch
Candids: Cartier-Bresson
Hopefully you'll get lots more replies. Just put them all together.

Carol asks…

What kind of camera is the best for photographing landscapes? (for beginner photographers)?

Can you please also explain why?

landscapeliving answers:

If you want to be serious about landscape photography, large format (4x5, 8x10, sometimes 5x7) is really the only way to go. You can read up why on numerous sites, they reasons are too many to list without spending an hour writing this answer. You can always use digital cameras, but even professional digital cameras are nothing compared to large format photography for landscapes.

Linda asks…

what is the best digital camera for a photographer that takes landscape pictures?

landscapeliving answers:

The Cannon SD750 (black) seems to be one of the best cameras for the money. Also, consider a similar camera with an optical view finder. This really helps in bright sun.

Almost all cameras take landscape pictures. The two links below should help you find one that will do what you want at a price that you will like.

The last link is about keeping your battery and camera contacts clean. Digital cameras require lots of power. If the contacts are not really clean it can cause lots of problems.

Laura asks…

Professional Photographers: What are the best camera settings for taking photos at rock gigs?

I know EVERY stage has different set-up (lighting etc...) but I'm talking generally. Is there are certain mode e.g. landscape, people or specific manual settings?

Would be great if professional photographers replied!!

landscapeliving answers:

I shoot full manual and RAW.

For real general guidelines for MY camera and lenses on last minute shoots: I start with an ISO of 1000, an f/2.8, meter in the shutter speed and adjust from there. I had to do a last minute band shoot the other night, and got there 5 minutes before the band was to start. By the time I got my gear out, put together and the excess put aside, the band started. Using the above settings I was able to get dialed in and running quickly.

Good luck
