Lisa asks…
What are the differences between a landscape architect, contractor, and designer?
Can someone tell me the differences in those fields as in what their job responsibilities are, skill requirements, salary, etc? Thank you very much!
I am incredibly interested in Landscape Architecture, however, there are limited colleges near me (I already have to drive 2 hours to Tampa for LA college). Also, I am currently a concept artist/illustrator and skilled with Photoshop, so maybe landscape designer is best for me?
landscapeliving answers:
Landscape Architects design the landscape which is the outside for example around the house, flowers, driveway design ponds, etc. They must be skilled in visual arts and computer applications if neccessary. They make at least $75,00-$100,000 a year depending on skill level and reputation. Contractors get the workers for the jobs and oversee the project. Designers design the inside from rooms to kitchen accessories.

John asks…
How much time does a landscape architect spend inside compared to outside?
A landscape architect, not landscape designer (they spend nearly all their time outside). Best answer will go to the person who backs their answer up with plenty of examples.
landscapeliving answers:
I suppose it would depend a little on the individual, but generally, they are going to spend a smaller amount of time measuring the landscape, and observing lay and light, and the larger portion of time at their desk making renderings, and possibly even making changes on paper. Probably comes out to 10/90 or 20/80 in terms of time split.

Joseph asks…
Landscape Architects! Some questions for ya!?
Can someone who has no background in art, but great interest and determination be able to succeed in LA?
What is the day to day life of a landscape architect? Is it very physically demanding? (I'm about to be discharged as a disabled vet, with some physical limitations)
I have heard that I need to learn AutoCAD prior to entering a program. What are the best ways that I can do this on my own? Any advice?
I thank you very much for your time and I hope you're having a great day!
landscapeliving answers:
Depends on California...but most Landscape Architects are school trained Architects...and there may be an issue with using the term "architect" if you are not a state licensed architect.
Most of the Landscape Designers I know, have at least a minor in art...with the majority of their course work in Agricultural Areas...they have to know more about the plants than the design...things like Sunlight vs Shade, water and soil requirements, regional plants and planting times...
As a designer, you can purchase several programs similar to and including 3D Landscape...but these are programs anyone can buy and it will not separate you from the competition...knowledge about plants and landscaping will.
This is not a field that you can go buy some yard tools from Home Depot and expect to be busy all year. There is a lot of competition, not just in LA but everywhere...

Daniel asks…
What's the difference between a landscape architect and a landscape designer?
Best answer will be the answer that gives a detailed explanation of each occupation. But is the basic difference a landscape architect designs the area and a landscape designer will actually create the plan? Or is a landscape architect basically a more qualified landscape designer who does the same job, but for more money because of more knowledge studied?
landscapeliving answers:
Landscape architecture is the design of outdoor and public spaces to achieve environmental, socio-behavioral, and/or aesthetic outcomes. It involves the systematic investigation of existing social, ecological, and geological conditions and processes in the landscape, and the design of interventions that will produce the desired outcome. The scope of the profession includes: urban design; site planning; town or urban planning; environmental restoration; parks and recreation planning; visual resource management; green infrastructure planning and provision; and private estate and residence landscape master planning and design; all at varying scales of design, planning and management. A practitioner in the profession of landscape architecture is called a landscape architect.
==============================================================
Landscape design is an independent profession and a design and art tradition, practiced by Landscape designers, combining nature and culture. In contemporary practice Landscape design bridges between landscape architecture and garden design.
