Helen asks…
Is there any way to prevent trees that send out underground runners/suckers from doing so?
I have a tree that sends out shallow roots or runners that then grow to full size trees if given the chance. Can I prevent it from sending out the runners? And what is the best way to eliminate an already established offspring tree? Thank you!
landscapeliving answers:
Most likely your talking about a silver maple you will need to cut down the tree and kill the stump get the stump sprayed to kill the runners cut down all suckers they will grow into the septic tank lines and bust concrete

Charles asks…
What are the trees with purple flowers in southern california?
I was in LA area (Fullerton/Anaheim maybe?) many years ago and I can't remember the name of some flowering trees I saw there.
I tthink it was early summer but I'm not totally sure of the season, and these trees were all in bloom with pretty purple flowers. They seemed to grow pretty large, they definitely weren't bushes or anything, but normal sized trees.
Does anyone have an idea of what the trees could have been? They seemed to be pretty common. Thanks!
landscapeliving answers:
My bet is Jacaranda... Covered with purple flowers before the leaves come out. Much more dramatic than the other trees (Crape Myrtle etc) Gorgeous trees but cause a major mess when they drop those masses of sticky blooms.
Wikepedia has a good picture.

Jenny asks…
what are some reasons why my fruit trees dont bear much fruits?
I have 3 almost full grown size trees, orange, tangerine, and red plum tree, they bear little to no fruits.
landscapeliving answers:
It could easily be the pruning. Leave Citrus trees alone pretty much.. Especially do not disturb the soil nearby and if it is cold in your area do not trim the lower limbs ~ let them get real close to the ground. Citrus like a bit of water too. Fruit comes off the horizontal limbs (I weigh or tie mine down to force them a little).
The plum tree... Fruit grows on last season's wood (is that right? You better check this advice). Every second year is usually a good crop. Your plum tree might need a friend.. Everyone needs a partner once in a while.. Didn't anyone tell you about the birds and the bees when you were in high school? Anyway, I have a passionfruit vine which I think is a lemon (gay). ... Lol

Sandy asks…
How much do I pay for having a med size tree removed?
My 17 year old gardner and 2 of his friends removed a 12 foot tree for me. How much should I give him? He doesn't have a clue what to charge either.
landscapeliving answers:
Did they chop it down to the ground or remove it roots and all? Was it's trunk very large? Twelve feet is not very big in the tree removal business. I recently have gotten quotes to remove some dead pine trees from my lot and they are over 20 feet tall with 18" diameters. The price range varied but was from $275 per tree and up. To have the stump ground down would cost another $65. The factors that increase the cost for tree removal are as follows:
Location of the tree - can make it more difficult for tree removal
Manpower - how many persons does it take to remove the tree
Size of the tree
Health of the tree - Would have to hire a cherry picker
Bonded/Insured - Whether the person that you hired was bonded/insured raises the costs (because they have to pay their premiums)
Whether they hauled off the debris
If none of these are a factor, your cost goes way down.
